Similarly to Blackjack, this is a comparing card game where your main opponent is the banker or the dealer rather than other players. There are officially three different versions of the game:

Punto Banco

Known also as “North American Baccarat” but is usually just referred to as Baccarat in the United States where it’s played the most. This is the version that you’ll more than likely encounter when you visit any casino outside of Europe and you can play live baccarat online as well.

Chemin de Fer

Commonly called “Chemmy” is a version of the game that originated in France and is still the main version played there. The name means “railway” in French and is a faster variation than Punto Banco. Played with six decks, one player is designated as the banker and the dealer at the start of the game while the other players are “punters” . The position of the banker passes along to other players over the course of the game.

Baccarat Banque

This is the original casino version of the Baccarat and has a lot of similarities with Chemmy except that the banker position is constant and doesn’t pass on to other players.

If you want to learn how to play live Baccarat online it’s best to learn the Punto Banco version as it’s the most common one. The goal of the game is simple, you just have to bet on the likelihood of either the banker or a player getting a score as close to 9 as possible. The totals of each hand are calculated by summing up the values of cards held. Cards numbered 1-9 correspond to their face value in points, while the king, the queen, the jack and the number 10 have zero points. If the total sum of the cards in hand exceeds 9, then the value is reduced by 10, and the outcome is taken as the total.

Up to twelve players can play the game with 8 decks of cards, usually sitting at an oval table the players are dealt two cards each, both face down. Once the bets are placed the cards are turned face-up, any player that has a score of 8 or 9 wins, if there are no winners the round continues. Players with a score of bellow 5 will draw another card, those that have a score of 6 or 7 will stand and the banker can draw again.

The interesting thing about live baccarat is the fact that you can actually bet on other players rather than just yourself. So if you think that someone else might have the winning hand, you can simply bet on them. There’s also an option to bet on a tie, although it has the highest payout, the chances of you winning are very slim.

Baccarat at live casino, just like roulette, is almost completely a game of chance. There are some strategies that you can employ but most “systems” are a complete myth that only newer players will fall for.  There are no patterns to remember and every new round is like a fresh flip of the coin, it can really go either way every time and just because one player won a couple of times in a row, doesn’t mean that the banker will suddenly be on the same winning streak.

Speaking of bankers, Baccarat has one of the lowest house advantages of all of the card games. Most of the time the best strategy revolves around managing your funds rather than predicting the outcome of the game. You have to know when to call it a night if the game isn’t going your way, pocketing a percentage of your winnings is also a good trick to use to ensure that you keep most of your winnings.

Live Casino Baccarat

The fact that you can see and chat with the banker as well as other players makes playing live baccarat online much more enjoyable than the standard online version of the game. If you’re new to the game you can quickly learn by looking at the more experienced players and when and how they bet. It’s a game of chance but with more players this quickly becomes more exciting as you try to predict whose hand has the best chance of winning.

A lot of online casinos offer mobile live baccarat apps that you can use to play from your phone or tablet but for most people the best option is playing live dealer baccarat online on your pc from the comfort of your home since there’s no need to download anything and you can just jump right into the game.

William Hill, Royal Panda, 888 Casino, Paddy Power and a ton of other online casinos allow you to play live dealer baccarat so it’s a good place to start.

What are the minimum/maximum table limits?

This all depends, different casinos have different rules and you can find tables with different limits even in the same casino. Either way you can play baccarat online live with anything from 5$ to 5000$ and even more.

Do I have to deposit money before playing?

If you’re playing at a live baccarat online casino then yes, since there are other players involved as well as a real dealer, if you want to try the game out first you can always find a free version on the internet.

Do I have to know all of the rules before playing?

Not necessarily, other than understanding the core mechanics of the game there are certain rules related to bankers that won’t affect your outcome and if you’re playing live dealer baccarat at an online casino the banker will inform you of these rules anyway.

In Summary

Baccarat is a fairly simple to learn card game with a lot of history behind it that gets more exciting when the table is packed with players. You can find a ton of live baccarat online casinos and play for real money and with one of the lowest house edge of all of the casino card games it’s certainly a game that can bring in some huge winnings.
